Nickel Diner
I first came across Nickel Diner on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Since then I’ve seen it several more times and I keep wondering, “Is it worth the drive?” Well I woke up yesterday and said to Dylan, “We don’t need any more reason than good food!” This was day one of our spring break so we wanted to kick it off right! So we set off for our culinary adventure to downtown LA.
The kids were excited because they wanted to get the homemade Strawberry Pop Tarts. What a delicious, sweet, tart and crispy goodness.
We all shared two Maple Bacon Donuts which are made with brioche bread. I had to try this because I’m the type of person who likes to dip my bacon in my maple syrup. The donuts did not disappoint, but I’m glad we shared.
I told the server, “I want everything.” So she recommended their most popular item, which was not on my radar, the 5th and Main. It was a BBQ pork hash topped with 2 poached eggs served over breakfast potatoes. What a unique dish. There were chunks of sweet and savory BBQ pulled pork sitting on crispy potatoes…mmm.
Dylan got the Hangover Helper (their #2 seller) which was scrambled eggs with bacon, Italian sausage, potatoes, topped with pepper jack cheese, avocado and salsa. Dylan’s words are “it was pretty darn fantastic”.
I saw the dessert tray going around to different tables. I had to have something, but was too full to eat it now. So we got THREE to go! We tried the homemade Ding Dong, the Salt Peanut Cake and the S’Mores Cake. The Salt Peanut Cake had Ruffles Potato Chips in the Peanut Butter layer. I loved the crunch along with the creamy, the salt along with the sweet. The S’Mores cake had layers of chocolate cake, graham cracker, ganache and topped with toasted marshmallow meringue.
It was all worth the drive!
